Year 6
WELCOME TO YEAR 6!
Year 6 is a huge year for children at Widden Primary School. This year, the children learn to develop their independence further and be more responsible as they begin the final steps of their journey towards secondary school. In the Summer, they will have their SATs but more than that, they benefit from an enriched curriculum. They will learn more about the world around them as well as about themselves and will make great strides in their preparation for the next big step. Year 6 is also a difficult year with lots of changes and some big moments. However, the Year 6 team works hard with all colleagues to ensure the children enjoy a happy and progressive year, which should be full of fun, laughter and responsibility.

Term 3 - Should I Stay or Should I Go?
The children have been immense already this year and we have seen lots of fantastic progress with their learning. In Term 2, the children produced some wonderful pieces of writing, created some delicious pizzas and continued with their mathematical success. In Term 3, our attention switches to the History topic of migration. We will be finding out lots of key facts about how migration has evolved throughout history, where people have travelled to and the reasons why people decide to move around the globe. There will be opportunities to develop our vocabulary with many new key words and phrases being shared throughout the term. In Art, we will be inspired by Kandisnky to create wonderful colourful paintings. In Science we are looking at light, thinking about how light travels before entering our eyes and in PSHE we are developing our knowledge of looking after money. Please look at our topic web for more details about what we are studying throughout Term 3.
Writing Units - T3
In Term 3, we are going to be learning to write an adventure story, a balanced argument, a formal letter and a newspaper report. The main focus of the term is to build on our writing skills, expanding our knowledge of key vocabulary and developing cohesion. The narrative text that we are basing lots of our writing around is Odysseus by Hugh Lupton. Read the blurb below to find out more:
Set sail with Odysseus as he fights to find his way back home after the brutal Trojan War. On his ten year journey, he endures harrowing ordeals, battles monsters and learns what it means to be a hero.
PE
PE sessions take place on Wednesday (Netball) and Friday(Tennis). Children should come to school wearing their PE kit, including suitable footwear (trainers), and make sure that they have a water bottle. There are many opportunities for children in Y6 to represent Widden in sports fixtures throughout the year, we hope that lots of children will enjoy taking part in such events.
Reading
Reading records are to be brought in daily. Please make sure that you are listening to your child read during the week and record this in their books.
Homework
Homework will be given to the children on a Friday. This may include: Maths, Writing/SPaG, and/or topic work. This will need to be completed in the homework books, unless told otherwise. Homework is to be brought back to school the following Wednesday. This is a crucial rehearsal for secondary school, where homework is an important regular occurrence.
Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions.
